Abstract
An Assesment On Kocaeli/Akhisar-ı Geyve (Pamukova) Government Hall In The Lıght Of Zonıng Actıvıtıes Of The Perıod Of Abdulhamıd II (1876-1909)
The reign of Abdülhamid II (1876–1909) was one of the most intensive periods of zoning activities in Ottoman history. Despite the limited budget of the state, many structures were built in almost every area in the Ottoman geography and the country was made prosperous. Government halls were one type of the structures built to demonstrate the power of the central authority and to meet the needs of the growing Ottoman bureaucracy. Pamukova Government Hall, which is used as a city hall today, was one of the constructions built for the same purpose in that period.
Although Pamukova Government Hall was built as an official building, it reflects all the characteristics of the traditional house plan with its interior sofa (boardroom), which is widely used in the houses in Sakarya and its surroundings. Despite it lost many of its original features with the renovations and additions made in the following years, Pamukova Government Hall, which contains all the features of the late Ottoman architecture and reflects the power of the Ottoman central authority with its monumental structure, is an outstanding historical artifact that depicts the political, social and cultural structure of the period.
