Abstract
Ghazzali's İnterpretation for Concept of Repentance
The purpose of this study is to investigate the arguments of the great Islamic scholar Al-Ghazali on repentence, whose views and profound knowledge led to the commencement of two periods –known as the mutaqaddimin and the muta'akhirin – in the intellectual history of Ilm al-Kalam, the science of discourse. ‘Repentance’ is a Quranic concept. Terminologically speaking, ‘repentance’ refers to regret for committing past wrongs and feeling contrition by avoiding the same wrong deed, and it involves a firm commitment to not repeating it once more. In this study, we have observed that Al-Ghazali put forward original ideas and views on the concept of ‘repentance’, as he was adept at many disciplines such as Tafsir, Kalam, Fiqh and Logic.
As a result, although Al-Ghazali held some different views on the concept of ‘repentance’, it was observed that in general he shared the same views as the school of ahl as-sunnah.
