Abstract


Middle School Students' Opinions Towards Being A Scientist
In this study, it was aimed to examine middle school students' opinions towards being a scientist in terms of grade level and gender. Total 355 middle school students studying at 5 (80), 6 (111), 7 (81) and 8. (83) grade were participated in the research. The study was conducted using the screening model. The data were collected with an open-ended question as “Do you want to be a scientist? Why?” prepared by the researchers. The data obtained from the study were analyzed to use content analysis. Nearly half of all students expressed that want to be a scientist. It was determined that the reasons expressed by the students who want to be a scientist were gathered in categories such as social benefit, product, individual gains, seeing the characteristics of scientist themselves, interest toward applications and working area. More than half of all students expressed that didn’t want to be a scientist. It was determined that the reasons expressed by the students who didn’t want to be a scientist were gathered in categories such as negative opinions about scientific applications, not being suitable in terms of individual characteristics, different ideals, apathy and reluctance. As a result of the research, it was seen that more than half of 5th grade students and nearly half of 6th and 7th grade students want to be a scientist. Contrary to this situation, it was determined that more than half of the 8th grade students don’t want to be scientist. In terms of gender, it was determined that nearly half of male and female students want to be scientist. It was determined that the number of students who didn’t want to be a scientist increased as the grade level of the students increases.
