Abstract
The Sport Lodges in Ottoman Empire
The Ottoman sultans paid great attention to sports lodges, and with the expansion of the borders, they carried these sports lodges or built new ones in places they made capital. The most important reason for their support to the sports lodges is that they like sports branches such as wrestling, archery and horse riding as well as seeing these branches as preparations for war. The sports lodges that started to form during the reign of Orhan Bey continued to exist as far as Sultan Abdulhamid II. In this study, it was aimed to investigate the formation and activities of the sports lodges rather than the religious lodges. Various journals and books were searched to obtain the data in the study, and with the findings obtained, it was shown that the Ottoman Lodges were actually the basis of today’s sports clubs. In addition, the establishment periods and aims and activities of these clubs were mentioned.
