The Place of Indian Culture in 'A History of Religious Ideas': From 'Gotama Budha to the Triumph of Christianity' by Mircea Eliade
Mircea Eliade (1907-1986) is an important religion historian born in Romania, a well-known philosopher historian, thinker and professor at university. He worked at the Sorbonne and the Chicago Universities, respectively, and produced more than fifty works with theoretical value, especially on religious icons and myths. The work bearing the title of “From Gotama Buddha to the Triumph of Christianity”, which was published as the second work of A History of Religious Ideas trilogy constitutes the subject of our work. The work begins with the sixteenth episode and ends with the thirtieth episode. The five chapters of the fifteen chapters (XVII, XVIII, XIX, XXIII, XXIV) form part of Indian culture and beliefs. With this work, the ancient Indian cultures’ traces were tried to be followed within only these parts and Eliade's work. Our aim is to contribute to the promotion of Indian cultures in our country and to increase the usability of relevant cultural items in comparative studies in the field of social sciences.
