Female Parliamentarians of Democrat Party and Their Activities in the Parliamentary (1950-1960)
Women's suffrage was achieved for parliamentary elections in 1934 in the Republic of Turkey which was founded in 1923. Turkish women who obtained this right before the women in many world countries found their place in the Turkish Grand National Assembly with the parliamentary elections held in 1935 for the first time. In all three elections, holding before the founding of the Democrat Party, on average, seventeen women succeeded in getting into the parliament. After the founding of the DP, a new era had begun in the history of Turkey’s democracy. With the conjuncture that emerged after World War II, there had been many radical changes in the country, while the number of female deputies had also declined. While only 7 women got into the parliament in the elections of 1950 and 1954 that the DP came to power with an overwhelming majority; in the last election of the DP, which was the election of 1957, only 8 female deputies, including 7 from the DP and 1 from the Republican People's Party, succeeded in getting into the parliament. All the DP women MPs, who were active in inside and outside of the parliament, were sentenced to prison in the Yassıada courts for being infringed on the Constitution after the May 27 coup d'état. In this study, it is aimed to give information about female deputies who got into the parliament as a deputy of the DP, which had been a dominant actor in Turkish politics between 1950 and 1960.
