Abstract

Human Problem in the Philosophy of Socrates and Plato
The human problem, which is clearly stated by the word of ‘I researched myself’ which Heraclitus summed up the philosophy, gained a solid theoretical framework with Socrates. The borderline which separates the philosophy of Socrates from the previous ones is the human problem. Because Socrates's philosophy was largely learned from Plato's dialogues, and because many of Socrates's subjects gained more meaning in the unity of Plato's philosophy, we discussed the human problem in relation to Socrates and Plato's philosophies. In dialogues, Socrates elaborates on the basic qualities of human nature and moral virtues and considers human as a being of consciousness. Until the period of Socrates, the subjects of philosophy which were dealt with as a monologue turned into a dialogue with him. According to Socrates, a human can reach the knowledge of his nature through dialogue or dialectical thought. Therefore, in his philosophy, man can be defined as being capable of rationally answering a rational question. By giving rational answers to himself and others, human also becomes a moral subject.
