Abstract

The Effect of Social Spending on Economic Growth in G7 Countries
In this study, for determining the relationship between social spend-ing and economic growth in G7 countries, data of the share of social spending in GDP and real GDP per capita for the period 1980-2018 are used. Johansen Fisher panel cointegration test, OLS, DOLS and FMOLS tests and Dumitrescu and Hurlin panel causality tests were applied in the study. According to Johansen Fisher panel cointegra-tion test, there is a cointegration relationship between social spend-ing and economic growth. According to the results of OLS, homoge-neous and heterogeneous DOLS and homogeneous and heterogene-ous FMOLS tests, both variables affect each other positively. Accord-ing to the Dumitrescu and Hurlin panel causality test, there is a one-way causality between social spending and economic growth from social spending to economic growth. This result confirms the Keynes-ian approach and shows that the government's intervention in the economy through social spending will have positive consequences for economic growth.
